Building a Communication Network

SaskTel is proud to be the Official Technology Partner for the Saskatchewan Youth Heritage Fair web site. Our company has been around for over 90 years, so we know a lot about heritage too. We have an amazing history in creating telecommunications technology and building a network that serves the entire province.

Today, SaskTel is the leading full service communications company in Saskatchewan. We provide voice, data, dial and high-speed Internet, web-hosting, QUANTUMLYNX Office applications, secure electronic transactions, and text and messaging services over a fibre optic-based, fully digital network. That's quite a mouthful, but we are a big corporation with over 4,000 employees serving more than 600 communities. For all the details, visit our corporate web site at sasktel.com.

Firsts on the Fibre Frontier

You might not think that a Saskatchewan communications company would lead the nation, and in many cases the continent in inventing technology. SaskTel boasts a long list of technological firsts.

Longest Network

In 1984, SaskTel completed the world's longest fibre optics network, linking 52 cities and towns with digital video, voice and data.

Individual Line Services

By 1990, SaskTel had converted all rural multiparty lines to individual line service, the first telecommunications company in North America to do so.

Name Display

In 1994, SaskTel introduced Name Display service on your telephone to Canada.

All Digital System

In 1996, SaskTel became one of the first telecommunications companies in North America to have a 100% digital system. Saskatchewan is one of only two Canadian provinces with a fully digital system.

MessageManager

SaskTel was the first Canadian telecommunications company to put voice- processing equipment on your phone line.

Internet Service

We were the first to provide Internet service to all customers across Saskatchewan with no long distance charges.

High Speed Internet

We were the first in North America to offer high-speed Internet service using Digital Subscriber Line technology – a service available in nine Saskatchewan cities.

World Leader in Fibre Optics

SaskTel played a key role in the largest construction project of the 20th century – helping to install and test the communications system in the Channel Tunnel linking England and France.

Vast Cellular Coverage

SaskTel Mobility has one of the most extensive cellular coverage areas in Canada and recently launched digital Personal Cellular Service (PCS).

Technology Tours

We offer Technology Tours to high school students at our Switch Centres in Estevan, Moose Jaw, North Battleford, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon, Swift Current, Weyburn, and Yorkton. It's an hour-long guided tour showing you the telephone lines, the digital and fibre optic equipment and explaining how the phone system and the Internet works. Visit our web site at www.sasktel.com/tours/index.html and find out how teachers can book a tour for their classes and make it part of their computer science, physics, math or applied arts programs.

Scholarships

SaskTel offers scholarships to students who are seeking post-secondary education in areas related to the telecommunications industry. Find out how you can apply at www.sasktel.com/community/scholarship.html.
